I ought to point out, as a journalist working within the newspaper industry, that learning Teeline shorthand is a must if you want a staff position, and an honours degree in journalism is worthless if you're qualifications are not NCTJ accredited.
Great article by the way, a really worthwhile read wherever people are on the ladder.

This is a really good article; i think it's all about having passion for writing and especially passion for football, and it takes a lot of hard work, lots of writing to improve your style and develop the creativity. The best bit is you have a great excuse to watch a lot of football, and i think is best to be neutral and leave your heart at the door, the best writers are those reporting on the game , not ones with silly biased opinions.

As someone who plans the majority of his life around football and has nothing better to do than offer anyone who will listen an opinion on anything football related; maybe the idea I should be doing anything other than sports journalism is a bit funny. I think that the comments from professionals who have made it are helpful. It does appear though that the message is the same in any line of business, "keep at it" "put the hours and effort in" "learn to take rejection" "it is not what you know, it is who you know". That said there are helpful tips on how to go about improving these aspects, so a very big thank you to the writer

Great piece. I'm 16, living in Australia, and "getting in" is my dream. I've got an English passport, so maybe one day. Thanks for the tips!
